Joker co-writer/director Todd Phillips wants to see Warner Bros. produce a Batman spin-off film with his version of Gotham City.
“It’s a beautiful Gotham. What I would like to see someone tackle is what Batman looks like from that Gotham,” Phillips told Variety.
He is quick to say he’s not necessarily envisioning that he be the one to do it, however.
“I’m not saying I’m going to do that,” the writer/director said. “What was interesting to me about the inclusion of Batman in our movie was, ‘What kind of Batman does that Gotham make?’ That’s all I meant by that.”
Then 9-year-old actor Dante Pereira-Olson played a young Bruce Wayne in Joker, with Douglas Hodge as Alfred Pennyworth. Thomas and Martha Wayne are murdered in the final moments of the film.
Phillips and Joker star Joaquin Phoenix have repeated lysaid they were “open” to the idea of a Joker sequel, and Variety today reiterates that Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver met with Warner Bros. in late 2019 to explore that.
